Bestlife Eco Resort, Mattala: A Hidden Eco Getaway in Sri Lanka

Nestled in the lush countryside of southern Sri Lanka, just a short drive from Mattala Airport, Bestlife Eco Resort offers travellers looking for a peaceful eco-escape a unique blend of nature, comfort, and local charm. After spending some time there, here’s what I discovered — and why this place is worth considering for your next getaway.

Location & First Impressions

Bestlife Eco Resort is located on Lunugamwehera Old Road, Mattala (postal code 82634). It’s not right in a big city, which is part of its appeal — you can breathe fresh air, see greenery, and get away from the hustle for a bit. It’s also reasonably close to some notable wildlife parks and natural attractions.

On arrival, the resort’s huts or cabanas, built in eco or rustic style, greeting gardens, and quiet surroundings make for a calm and welcoming first impression. The architecture and layout are clearly designed to blend with nature rather than compete with it.

Accommodations & Facilities

  • Rooms / Cabins: The resort offers cabana-style lodges or cottages (sometimes “twin chalets”) that are modest but cosy. Many reviews say the rooms are “spacious enough to accommodate a small family,” and the outdoor environment is pleasing.

  • Amenities: Free WiFi is provided in rooms or central areas. Meals are served on-site; there is a restaurant & bar.

  • Eco & Natural Features: As an “eco resort,” Bestlife tries to preserve the surroundings. Guests have noted views of wildlife (peacocks, sometimes elephants in nearby reserves) and enjoy walking around the grounds at sunset.

  • Other Perks: 24-hour front desk, parking, airport shuttle (or at least easy access to Mattala International Airport), picnic or BBQ areas, and opportunities for local excursions.

What I Loved

  1. Disconnect from the City: If you're tired of big hotels, city chaos, concrete and traffic, this place offers peace. The quiet, the greenery, the subtle sounds of nature make it ideal for relaxing.

  2. Proximity to Nature & Wildlife: Because it’s near parks like Lunugamwehera, one can arrange safari trips or wildlife-park adventures without too much traveling. Also, watching peacocks or hearing wildlife adds to the atmosphere.

  3. Friendly Staff & Local Vibe: Many guests mention that the staff are warm, helpful and make you feel welcome. The resort seems like it's more than just a business — there’s a personal touch.

  4. Good Value for Groups & Families: The cabins are suitable for small families or groups, and the environment is safe and child-friendly. BBQ nights, campfires, etc., are fun community touches.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Room Maintenance: Some guests have reported that the rooms or bathrooms are not always as well maintained as hoped (issues with cleanliness, odours, or air conditioning) especially if you go expecting luxury.

  • Food Variety: Although the food is tasty (many reviewers praise the BBQ dinners), options and variety may be limited; if you have picky eaters or specific dietary needs, plan ahead.

  • No Swimming Pool: If you are hoping for a poolside holiday, this place might not deliver. It seems the priority is on nature and calm rather than resort-style luxury.

  • Expect Nature: Frogs, insects, natural smells, etc. These come with the eco-setting. For many, this is part of the charm; for others used to more sanitized environments, it might need adjusting.

Best Times & Suggestions for Stay

  • Best time to visit: Dry season (southern Sri Lanka) when roads are good, skies are clearer, and wildlife sightings are more reliable.

  • Duration: One or two nights is enough to unwind; more if you want to explore nearby parks, beaches, or do day-trips.

  • What to pack:

    • Insect repellent & mosquito net or spray (just in case)

    • Light clothes + a sweater or wrap for cooler evenings

    • Comfortable walking shoes

    • Camera for nature & wildlife

    • Flashlight or torch (if staying in more rustic cabins)

Overall Verdict

Bestlife Eco Resort, Mattala is not a luxury 5-star escape, but it doesn’t pretend to be. What it does offer is a very decent, nature-friendly, modestly priced retreat for those who want to slow down, enjoy greenery, get in touch with wildlife, breathe fresh air, and spend evenings under stars. It’s great for families, friends, eco-travelers, and anyone who likes the outdoors without sacrificing basic comforts.

If I were you, I'd recommend staying here if you want:

  • A quiet stay near Mattala

  • Access to wildlife parks and natural scenery

  • A relaxed atmosphere rather than all-luxury glitz

Perhaps not the best choice if your priority is polished luxury, abundant amenities, or ultra-modern settings.
